DESIGN STATEMENT:
BAY 9 Art Gallery is an Australian owned not-for-profit organisation who focuses on local and emerging artists. BAY 9 requires spaces for flexible artwork display, staff amenities, storage and a flexible event space. The client values showcasing new and unique ideas, honoring the existing building character and creating a luxurious welcoming entry space.
The current site is an existing warehouse space. The existing space is a single bay of the heritage building which has two street facing facades. The interior space measures 21 meters in height.
The existing heritage facade and envelope must remain unchanged. The existing building core including toilets and lift locations must remain as is. Changes to fixtures and materiality can be made. Stairs are to be straight structures and there are existing voids in the building; one on level 1 and two on level two.
The art gallery will draw upon the unique Australian natural concepts. It will do so using earthy textures and materiality such as rammed earth. concrete and terrazzo. Muted greens and purples will be sed throughout in contrast against a warmer beige to create a warm environment.
